Codrington Enterprises’ athletes performed admirably this past weekend at the UTA Invitational in Arlington, Texas. They started with the 4 x 100m relay, pulling out a victory with an excellent early season time of 39.90. They then attacked the 100m race in the 2nd of 11 heats, finishing 1st, 2nd and 4th, with Steve Slowly nipping Ackeem Forde in 10.36 to 10.38. Jamil Hubbard took the 4th position in 10.48, which proved to be an excellent warm up for the 400m specialist as he powered his way to a victory in heat two of the 200m, clocking a personal best of 20.77. Coach Lloyd Edwards of New Era Sprint Club, the coach for these athletes, commented that “ had Jamil been in the first heat, he would have been pushed to a much faster performance”. Meanwhile, two of our athletes are competing in Trinidad at the Southern Games with Barnabas Kirui finishing 3rd in the 5000m after arriving at 5:00am and running his race that same afternoon. Stay tuned for more as the season progresses!

On April 16th and 17th, CE athletes Shakera Reece, Jordan Desilets, Jamil Hubbard and Eric Alejandro competed in the 10th Annual Falcon Games in Tobago. For three of the athletes, this was their opening race for the season and they were anxious to gauge where they were in their preparations.

Shakera won both the 100m and the 200m and was quite pleased with her performances as she is ahead off where she normally starts her season, both in the time and her overall fitness. Jamil was also satisfied with his 200m start as he had not raced over the distance for 2 seasons, opting to focus more on his pet event, the 400m. Jordan came away with a victory in the 5000m and was up very early the next morning to contest a road 10k, where he was the 3rd placed finisher.

Eric saved the best for last, producing a personal best with his first race for the season, leading World Junior Champion, Jehue Gordon of Trinidad and Tobago, to the last hurdle in the men’s 400m hurdles, before hitting that hurdle and losing the race by a narrow margin. The race can be viewed here. Men\’s 400m hurdles, 2011 Falcon Games in Tobago

Competing in Europe has always been the goal for most elite athletes traveling from the USA, but the planning, travel and event schedule can be a challenge for the agent/manager. The behind the scenes work to get everything together takes some doing and this work is sometimes under appreciated by the athletes themselves.

Getting the confirmation in ample enough time to get an affordable plane ticket, set up the flight plan, arrange airport or train depot pickup, hotel and meals, inter-meet transportation and then onto the next competition can be a series of 24 hour stints before it is all arranged with 4-6 meets arranged and coordinated for the athletes’ well being and comfort. Multiply this by 10 or even 20 athletes and the work is a real juggling act.

The next time you watch a meet on television or if you are one of the elite athletes in question, bear this in mind as you line up for your event, well rested and ready to compete!
